ISO, the International Organization for Standardization, defines a standard as ‘a document, established by a consensus of subject matter experts and approved by a recognised body that provides guidance on the design, use or performance of materials, products, processes, services, systems or persons’. In other words, a standard is an agreed and documented way of doing something. Standards contain precise criteria that can be used as a guideline to help with the reliability, consistency and effectiveness of the products and services we use. ISO Standard Certification is a proof a product or company is responsibly operating in line with the industry best practices and management systems. This is a universal standard and is governed by an independent, non-governmental international organization with a membership of 163 national standards bodies with its Central Secretariat in Geneva, Switzerland.

In education, the term high expectations, or the phrase common high expectations, typically refers to any effort to set the same high educational standards for all students in a class, school, or education system. In other words, students who are expected to learn more or perform better generally do so, while those held to lower expectations usually achieve less. Learning standards are one strategy that policy makers and educators use to promote high expectations in schools. The CQI Standards Coordination Committee exists to coordinate strategy and direct the CQI’s sponsored standards activity. This includes determining those standards which are of importance to the CQI, directing and coordinating participation in their development, and recommending the development of products, services, and assets relating to the use of international standards. The scope of the Committee’s activity encompasses quality and other related management systems standards, and management systems audit standards which are of strategic or operational importance to CQI, including those for which the CQI has products, services, or assets.

Everyone is welcome to participate in IEEE SA activities beyond standards development. Over the course of a standard’s development, the working group takes this kind of basic concept and fleshes out the technological aspects, processes, and other key attributes of how it can be achieved. These help ensure product functionality and compatibility, facilitate interoperability and support user safety, and data security and privacy. These are standards whose use is theoretically voluntary, but in practice is widely adopted for the sake of ease of manufacture, interchangeability, and safety.
